During the days 19, 20 and 21 of last September Arantec Enginheria S.L. participated as a stakeholder in the 2nd AnywhereH2020 meeting and workshop at the Finnish Institute of Meteorology (IMF) in Helsinki, Finland.
The main aim of Anywhere is to enable society as a whole and the major European civil protection agencies to respond more quickly to extreme climatic and climatic events and to cope with the high social, environmental and economic impacts associated with these extreme natural phenomena.
There are 13 European countries participating in this project led by the UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) in Spain together with private R + D + I companies. Arantec is one of them.
The project presented by arantec was the Sió River Early Warning System (Segarra) through the Smarty River solution.
The Smarty River Early Warning System for Flood Risk (SAPI), installed a few months ago by Arantec in the Sió River, through the installation of 2 river level sensors and 3 rain gauges with temperature and relative humidity, allows the responsible for the municipality of Agramunt coordinate the tasks of prevention and alert the population to inform the citizens of the situation of the river in real time and take preventive measures against possible rovinadas of sudden flood of river flow.
We interviewed Mario Losañez, Arantec’s business development director about his participation in Anywhere.
Question – Is this the first time that Arantec attends this congress?
Answer- Yes, it’s the first time. Well, I must say that it is not really a congress, but a Workshop where the progress of the Anywhere project is debated and we were invited by the UPC last year to its first edition in Genoa, although we could not attend because of being with the preparations for the Meteorologichal Technology World Expo. At their second meeting we are very pleased to have been able to attend the meeting in Helsinki.
Q- What has been the contribution of Arantec in this edition? How have they received your success story?
A- The contribution of Arantec, as a stakeholder, has been based on two fundamental aspects, one in the relationship of networking with UPC and with other countries with the aim of integrating the prediction solutions developed by the Anywhere project with the solutions SmartyPlanet’s real-time data collection and early warning systems. The other fundamental aspect has been the possibility to present our case of success, through a poster, in the town of Agramunt where SmartyRiver solutions allowed to alert the population in 2016 well in advance so that the misfortune of the year was not repeated previous.
Q- The Anywhere Project, in which 13 European countries participate, is led in Spain by the UPC in collaboration with R & D & I companies. What is the role that Arantec plays?
A- As I mentioned, Arantec is among the group of stakeholders or companies in charge of marketing the solutions developed in the Anywhere project and integrate them in the market together with those that we have already contributed (Smarty Planet) in a joint product of prediction and alert or either in separate modules, depending on the needs of future clients.
Q- What assessment do you make of the experience and your participation?
R- The experience has been very satisfactory and with total certainty we will be in the next edition that is celebrated in house (Barcelona), since it has allowed us to strengthen our relations with the different companies and organizations with which we were working, as well as to give to know our solutions to the different countries and working groups of the project.
Q- What solutions can the work of Arantec contribute in the sense of the project proposals?
A- The work of Arantec within this project serves as a link between the development of the project and the market introduction of the prediction solution along with early warning at both general and local level.
Q- According to you, where do European and global preventive projects have to progress in the face of increasingly frequent environmental phenomena such as hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes and the impact of climate change on flood risk prevention?
A- In this case, the Anywhere project develops these aspects precisely by bringing together many countries with the objective of having a tool for forecasting natural disasters and integrating it with the different emergency warning and management system solutions to save lives.
